North American culture often demeans, marginalizes, and demonizes people identified or labeled as “others”. As Memmi (1968) points out, the process of “othering” always involves establishing an attitude and mindset of “difference” such that those in positions of power define the “others” as “inferior” and define themselves as “superior” beings.  Since the events of September 11, 2001, the American media, politicians, and the public have identified people of Arab descent, Muslims and individuals with an Arabic or Muslim sounding name, as “others” or “not us”, even not quite “human”; in fact, our government has played a key role in their demonization, and with the mainstream media, has persuaded many people that these “others” are dangerous and a threat to our security and society. “Others” are, in this way, “constructed” in order to “justify” ill-treatment, abuse, torture and our all-out war against them.
